Reaction-induced volume change triggers brittle failure at eclogite facies conditions

چکیده

Metamorphic reactions can lead to important changes in rock strength and density. Eclogitization constitutes one of the most emblematic transformations continental subduction zones, where conversion lower crustal rocks into eclogite facies correlates with occurrence seismogenic events. The relationship between eclogitization seismicity has been highlighted several studies, but processes that trigger brittle failure remain highly debated. Indeed, whether change density (from ∼2850 kg.m−3 ∼3300 kg.m−3) or rheology embrittlement is still enigmatic. Here we show eclogitization-induced volume occurring out equilibrium can, by itself, generate sufficient shear stress fail at high-pressure conditions. Intermediate-depth earthquakes zones could therefore be explained changes, even without considering rheological modifications induced mineral reactions. Our results also indicate interplay negative frictional plastic yielding enhance propagation process a runaway mechanism as long reaction not limited lack reactants.

Eclogite-facies fluid infiltration: constraints from dO zoning in garnet

In situ analysis reveals that eclogite-facies garnets are zoned in dO with lower values in the core and rims that are *1.5 to 2.5 % higher. This pattern is present in 9 out of 12 garnets analyzed by SIMS from four orogenic eclogite terranes, and correlates with an increase in the mole fraction of pyrope and Mg/Fe ratio from core to rim, indicating prograde garnet growth. At the maximum temperat...

Whole-rock Geochemistry and Metamorphism of Blueschist/eclogite-facies Mafic Rocks on Syros, Cyclades, Greece

The island of Syros consists largely of possibly-repeated sequences of glaucophane-bearing calcareous schists, mafic schists, dolomite marbles, and calcite marbles containing abundant aragonite pseudomorphs (Dixon, 1969; Hecht, 1984). Several discrete, fault-bounded packages of blueschist/eclogite-facies mafic rocks with minor serpentinite are also found on the island. Although the mafic rocks ...

Late Miocene–Pliocene eclogite facies metamorphism, D’Entrecasteaux Islands, SE Papua New Guinea

The D’Entrecasteaux Islands of south-eastern Papua New Guinea are active metamorphic core complexes that formed within a region where the plate tectonic regime has transitioned from subduction to rifting. While rapid, post 4 Myr exhumation and cooling of amphibolite and greenschist facies rocks that constitute the footwall of the crustal scale detachment fault system have been previously docume...

The Failure of Intracranial Pressure-volume Change

A variety of lesions of the central nervous system may be associated with disturbances of renal function characterized by either the increased urinary loss of sodium and chloride (1-3) or the retention of salt (3-8). It has also been postulated that changes in the excretion of salt, secondary to alterations in the volume of blood or extracellular fluid, are mediated by a "volume receptor" locat...

Gabbro-Eclogite Reaction Rate and Its Geophysical Significance

The gabbro-garnet granulite-eclogite transformation may play a significant role in driving the motions of terrestrial lithospheric plates. Whether or not this transformation is in fact important as a driving mechanism for plate tectonics depends on the relationship of the reaction time to geologic time. Solid state diffusion under completely dry conditions is investigated as a possible model fo...
